Wolves
Tim always sat alone at lunch, away from everyone else. At lunch, he would gaze longingly at people who had the privelege of having friends. He wondered when he would find people who would enjoy his company, or simply make him belong somewhere, anywhere. He tried everything to draw attention to himself. He wore brightly colored clothing to school, disrespected teachers, and even lowered his grades. But nothing worked. Until Don Ressett transferred to his school.
Don had somehow grown to be the most popular kid at school in a short amount of time. He did a variety of things at school, such as write things on student's desks, and whack their heads with chalkboard erasers at lunch. Tim didn't like what he did, but he thought that Don could help him escape from his lonely world. To him, Don was the only escape. Don could give Tim a better social status, which meant that Tim could finally be happy.
One day, Tim devised a plan in which he would run around school in his underpants, in the hopes that it would grab Don's attention. As his bare feet patted against the cold tiling of the school hallways, Tim began to feel his face burn, and the laughter of his schoolmates seemed to turn into mockery in his mind. He almost stopped, but decided that doing this would be worth it.
The next day, Don came up to Tim at lunch. As Don came closer, Tim could feel his body become limb. His face beamed. His heart pounded in his chest.
"So, I saw you running around school yesterday. You're actually a pretty funny guy you know. It's a shame that no one rewards you for it though." Don said.
Tim was filling to the brim with happiness. " You really think so? No one has ever thought of me that way before!"
"That's why I'm here Tim," Don said, "I'd like you to join my group."
Tim's jaw widened in awe. Then, a large smile spread across his face. "I won't let you down! I'll be a great addition to your group! I promise!"
After Tim said this, a cruel smile appeared on Don's face. "There's just one more thing thst I'd like to add."
Tim's face dimmed a bit. "What is it?"
"I just want you to meet me near the edge of the woods on the first day it starts snowing. Just be there. You're gonna prove to me that you're good enough for my group. If I deem you worthy, you'll be accepted," Don said.
"I'll be there! I'll do whatever I have to do to prove myself to you, Don. Don't you worry!" Tim said with vigor and energy.
"Ok then. See you there," Don said as he walked away, leaving Tim to spend lunch alone.
Tim had been waiting for the first snowy day for a long time. Then, it finally came. After school, Tim walked to the edge of the woods. He was wearing his best clothes, and a large smile on his face. When he arrived, he saw Don and his friends. Tim's head began to spin as he imagined all the different activities they would do together when he proved himself worthy.
"Hey Don!" Tim said excitedly.
"Tim! Looks like you really showed up. You must really want to prove yourself, don't you?" Don said.
"Yes! Yes I do!" Tim responded happily.
"This is how it's gonna work. You're gonna climb up one of those poles, and you're gonna stay there until we come back. Got it?" Don explained.
"Sure! I'm a great climber, so I'll definitely be able to do this!" Tim said.
Tim propelled him self into the air and latched on to the wooden pole. Then, he began to skooch his way up the pole. His leg muscles felt a bit tired, but he didn't care.
"Ok, now we're gonna go get something. Billy's gonna keep watch on you. If you try to get down, he'll tell me, and I won't let you join. Is that clear?" Don asked.
"Very clear!" Tim yelled from the pole.
Tim kept his position on the pole for a very long time. He didn't know how long he had been there, but it felt like an eternity. His arms and legs ached, but he didn't feel the pain. All he could think about was what he would be after he had proved himself: happy. He wouldn't have to be an lonely, pathetic attention seeker anymore. He could finally have people who would accept him.
Then, Billy's phone rang. Billy looked up at Tim, and smiled maliciously. Tim's heart sank into his stomach. He wanted to jump down and ask what had happened, but he didn't have the courage to. As he was thinking about this, Billy began to run far, far away, until he became a dot in the winter sunlight.
The barking of dogs suddenly became closer. Tim looked on in horror as an entire pack of wolves encircled the pole he was on. The clawed at the wooden pole, their claws just barely touching Tim. They growled and barked, saliva dripping onto the ground whenever they did so. Water began to sprout from Tim's eyes, he shouted out for help until his voice was reduced to a mere croak. His eyes were fearful and red. He knew that he would die soon, but just couldn't accept it yet.
